• 4 Areas of Safety Planning

Safety

  • Safety

The safety, security and well-being of students and staff are top priorities at CMS. We are committed to maintaining a secure learning environment where students can thrive.

Emergency Notifications: Parents will receive notifications and updates regarding any incidents at their child's school.

Emergency Response Protocols: Students will not be released during an emergency until law enforcement determines it is safe and a controlled dismissal process is possible.

School Safety Plans: Each school has emergency response plans developed in partnership with local law enforcement and emergency responders.

Threats to CMS schools are taken seriously and investigated immediately. In North Carolina, making threats against schools is a felony, and offenders will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

    Personnel

School Resource Officers (SROs) are specially trained to handle school-based emergencies. Staff members are trained to contact law enforcement immediately if they perceive a safety threat.

    Mental Health Support:
Students have access to counselors, psychologists, social workers, and school-based mental health services. Parents noticing behavioral changes in their children are encouraged to reach out to school staff for support.

    Buildings & Security

Every school is required to develop and update a safety plan for emergencies. While staff members are trained in these procedures, specific details are kept confidential to ensure security.

    Security Measures:

    • Lockdown drills are conducted twice per year and reviewed for improvements.

    • Closed campuses with secured exterior doors and controlled entry points. Violations should be reported.

    • Security features include:

      • Main entry buzz-in and camera systems at all schools.

      • Fencing around school grounds.

      • New school buildings are designed with security vestibules at entrances.

      • LobbyGuard technology to screen visitors, volunteers, and guests, alerting staff if unauthorized individuals attempt entry.

    Prevention & Awareness

    Prevention & Awareness

    Anonymous Reporting:
The Say Something Anonymous Reporting System enables you to anonymously report an issue 24/7/365 through an app, hotline, or website when a classmate is at risk of harming themselves or others.

    Active Survival Training:
CMSPD provides annual survival training for all CMS staff and employees to prepare for emergencies.

    Bullying Prevention:
We believe every student deserves to learn in an environment where they feel safe, respected, and supported. Preventing bullying begins with building a positive school climate - starting in our classrooms and extending to every corner of our campuses.

    Body Scanners:
    Actively monitoring entrances at:

    • All comprehensive high schools

    • K-8 and middle schools
